‘ARCHIV. theorie & praxis’ is published four times a year, in February, May, July and November, with a circulation of approximately 3,600 copies.

From 1947 to 2007, the journal was published under the title ‘Der Archivar. Mitteilungsblatt für deutsches Archivwesen’ , and from 2008 to 2022 as ‘ARCHIVAR. Zeitschrift für Archivwesen’. From 2023, the journal will be published under the title ‘ARCHIV. theorie & praxis’.

The journal is primarily aimed at a specialist audience: archivists, but also readers from related disciplines (historians, librarians, administrators). Members of the VdA receive the journal as part of their membership. It will also be available for subscription at a fee in Germany and abroad. Individual issues can be obtained from the publisher Franz Schmitt (Siegburg).

Each issue of ARCHIV. theorie & praxis contains the following sections: a (varying) thematic focus, the section ‘Innovation and Experience’ with current specialist articles from various subject areas, conference and literature reports, announcements and articles from the State Archives of North Rhine-Westphalia and the Association of German Archivists (VdA), which is also responsible for publishing personnel news and obituaries. The editorial office of the journal is located at the Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen.

Starting with issue 3/1999, the magazine is also available online. Work is currently underway to digitise earlier issues.

Development of the journal

Based on a licence granted by the British Military Government on 14 December 1946, the journal was intended to serve as a link between archives of all disciplines in Germany. The State Archives in Düsseldorf and its then director, Dr Bernhard Vollmer, took on the role of publisher. The Association of German Archivists, founded in 1947, designated the journal as its official publication. In 1966, the Minister of Culture of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia assigned the Düsseldorf State Archives the official task of publishing the journal Der Archivar as a joint organ for all German archives and archivists. In the same year, the Association of German Archivists stipulated in its statutes that its association communications would be published in Der Archivar.

In 2006, the Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen and the Association of German Archivists (Verband deutscher Archivarinnen und Archivare e.V.) signed an agreement on joint publication of the journal. In addition to necessary organisational changes, this also led to a conceptual reorientation; for example, thematic focuses were introduced for the individual issues. The State Archives and the Association of German Archivists are each represented by three members on the journal's advisory board.
