Gemeindearchiv Kerken

Dusty files in stuffy cellars - the cliché about archives has long since had its day in Kerken: in the friendly, bright rooms of the 18th century building, centrally located in the former weaving village of Nieukerk, interested citizens can trace Kerken's fascinating past. They are supported by the archive's volunteer team and the head of archive, Nicole Sillekens.

Our holdings

The oldest official records from the area of today's municipality of Kerken are over 370 years old: that is how far back the records from the former Honschaft Eyll go. In addition to the documents from Prussian and French times, there are numerous archive units from the 19th and 20th centuries, including the First and Second World Wars and more recent history up to the early 1990s.

The records from the National Socialist era have been almost completely preserved for the Nieukerk municipal office - a special feature, as the files from these years have often been lost or destroyed elsewhere. They are an important source for anyone interested in history. In addition, there are a number of historical treasures from private holdings and collections, from political parties and associations, as well as an extensive archive of maps and photographs. The archive library offers a comprehensive selection of books on regional history.
