Local and regional research

Research into the history of one's own place of residence and homeland is often carried out by historically interested people. Local and regional history makes a valuable contribution to the development of a local identity. At the same time, it offers a meaningful addition to regional, national and sometimes even supranational historical research, as it establishes connections through detailed findings and can possibly verify assumptions.

The Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen is an important contact point for local and regional history research. With the documents from the lower state administrative authorities of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the Landesarchiv NRW preserves a wide range of sources relating to local history. In addition, it has a rich and dense collection of records from the lower manorial and judicial level to the top of the sovereign administration for the former ecclesiastical and secular territories in the area of today's state of North Rhine-Westphalia. These records date back to the Middle Ages. Local history researchers will find a rich selection of local and regional historical literature in the archive libraries of the regional divisions.

The Lippe Salbücher

The Lippe Salbücher from the 16th to 19th centuries are among the most frequently used sources in the East Westphalia-Lippe Division of the Landesarchiv NRW in Detmold. Anyone researching the history of a village, a farm or a family in Lippe will consult these Salbücher, as they contain information on every property subject to land tax, from stately manor houses to modest roadside cottages.

The Salbücher are kept as fonds L 101 C I Lippische Salbücher und Katasterbücher, which were newly recorded by Roland Linde in 2000 and completely digitized in 2022. The finding aid for the collection can be viewed here.

The comprehensive historical-source introduction to the collection and the very helpful appendix (with index of place names, index of personal names, bibliography, references to additional sources, currencies, measurements, word explanations and the concordance table of old and new signatures), which were previously only available as part of the printed finding aid, are now also available for use on the Internet.

First mention of places

The first mention of a place is often the basis for a community or town anniversary. With this - incomplete - list, we offer local history and place researchers a service to help track down the occasion for your anniversary. The list is constantly being expanded! All documents are in German.
