The Chairman - Dr. Tobias Herrmann

The Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen is headed by the Chairman, who bears the overall responsibility for the archive. This involves acting as their representative, determining the strategic direction and overseeing all archiving activities and their professional implementation.

Chairman’s biography

  • Born in Aachen in 1975.
  • From 1994 to 2006, studied history, political science, economics and German philology at the universities of Aachen, Nottingham and Bonn.
  • In 2006, obtained a doctorate in medieval and modern history from the University of Bonn. Dissertation topic: The beginnings of municipal writing – Aachen in the European context.
  • 2006 to 2008 Trainee for the higher archival service at the Bundesarchiv in Koblenz, Berlin and Freiburg as well as at the Archivschule Marburg
  • 2008 to 2012 Head of the Ludwigsburg branch of the Bundesarchiv, responsible for the documents of the Central Office of the State Justice Administrations for the Investigation of Nazi Crimes
  • 2012 to 2023: In the Department for Technical Policy Matters at the Bundesarchiv in Koblenz, responsible for press and public relations, strategic planning, management support, international relations, among other things; from 2016: Head of Division GW 1; from 2021: Permanent Representative of the Head of Department GW (Policy and Science)
  • 2023 to 2025 Head of the Federal Republic of Germany Department of the Bundesarchiv
  • Since December 2025 President of the Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen
