The Chairman - Dr. Frank M. Bischoff

The State Archives are headed by the Chairman, who bears the overall responsibility for the archives. This involves acting as their representative, determining the strategic direction and overseeing all archiving activities and their professional implementation.

Chairman’s biography

  • 25.6.1959     Born in Altenkirchen (Westerwald region), Germany, married with two daughters
  • 1978-1985    First degree (Staatsexamen) in history, Protestant theology and educational theory at the Universities of Mainz and Marburg
  • 1985-1986    Postgraduate degree (Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies) in History & Civilisation at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales, Paris
  • 1986-1991    Research assistant at the Department of Historical Auxiliary Sciences and the Photographic Archives of Older Original Documents until 1250, University of Marburg
  • 1991-1995    Lecturer at the Department of History at the University of Marburg
  • 1993             PhD in Historical Auxiliary Sciences at the University of Marburg
  • 1993-1994    Research Fellow at the German Historical Institute in Rome
  • 1994-1996    Trainee archivist at the State Archives of Detmold and at the Archives School Marburg
  • 1996-2003    Section Head and – from 1999 – Head of Department at the State Archives in Münster
  • 2003-2009    Head of the Archives School Marburg
  • 2009-2013    Head of the Rhineland Department of the State Archives of North Rhine-Westphalia
