School
The Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen is a living place of history and historical education. There are few places where history becomes as tangible for children and young people as in archives. Anyone who wants to search for historical clues and find out what was happening in their city or family at a certain time must ask questions, follow clues, gather evidence, and reconstruct the case they are looking for from individual pieces of the puzzle. This path of research leads to the archive.
University
When studying history, there is often little time to deal with sources in the archives. Those who read a lot of secondary literature and thus gain access to the world of academia are initially still a long way from working with original sources. Often, working with sources yourself is only required as part of a thesis. Although archive-based research does not mean less work, it does prepare you well for your bachelor's, master's or doctoral thesis.
Family research
Numerous sources accessible in public archives provide information about family history. The Landesarchiv holds a rich collection of authentic records of the past, containing countless details of baptisms, births, marriages, and deaths. These records are mainly held in the civil status archives in Duisburg (for the North Rhine region) and Detmold (for the Westphalia and Lippe regions).
Career
The Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen offers many opportunities to learn and pursue a career. In addition to archivists in the upper and higher civil service and specialist staff for media and information services, there are also regular vacancies in the areas of administration, IT, and restoration.
Land registers and land records
The Westphalia Division holds a large portion of the land registers and land records for the two administrative districts of Münster and Arnsberg, generally up to the introduction of the loose-leaf land register in the 1970s. Land registers and land records that were not transferred to the Westphalia Division are held by the respective local court.
When searching for land registers and land files in the holdings of the Landesarchiv, the historical information on the district, volume and page of a property must be known. These land register designations can be obtained from the relevant local court.
These holdings can only be viewed in the reading room of the Westphalia Division if they are ordered in advance, as the judicial administration's holdings are stored in an external repository. Please place your order by 12 noon on the Thursday of the previous week for the following week. You can send your order by email to the following address: westfalen[at]lav.nrw.de.
Transcripts of archival materials – personal documents
With this service, the Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen, Division Westphalia aims to provide a platform for making existing transcripts of archival materials accessible. The transcripts do not claim to be editions, but they do facilitate access to the originals, which are often difficult to read. Responsibility for the reproduction of the texts lies with the editors.
